This has been in the works for a while, and I’m thrilled to finally share it: Cetera is officially moving from Substack to Ghost.
If you’re already a subscriber, don’t worry. Your subscription will carry over automatically and all the stories you know and maybe even love have made the move right along with us. In other words, you don’t have to lift a finger. You’ll keep getting new stories in your inbox exactly as before, and the full archive will remain available for everyone.

Why is this happening?
Two big reasons. First, Cetera is really starting to grow, which means we’re now opening up paid memberships with new perks. Doing that just isn’t feasible on the Substack platform, and Ghost allows us to keep 100% of revenue. We also have the ability to set up promos and tipping features for readers who can’t commit to monthly or yearly subscriptions but still want to support us.
Secondly, I’ve grown increasingly uncomfortable with some of Substack’s decisions since we joined and overall how the platform functions. Additionally, the people who run this place have made questionable choices about quality control over the last few years that have made potential readers hesitate when wanting to subscribe to us. Moving to Ghost allows Cetera to stand fully on its own.
So, what’s next?
You’ll still get new short stories every Thursday plus even more bells and whistles if you’re a paid subscriber. But overall, my goal is to grow Cetera into a space that feels even more like a literary magazine, a place where you find something that makes you think or laugh or both every week.
This is a leap of faith for our team. Leaving Substack’s built-in network means Cetera will depend more than ever on word-of-mouth and reader support. And if you’re a free subscriber, please consider upgrading to a paid plan on our new platform to help keep this project surviving and thriving.
